Policy Advocate Helen Henderson and Bayscape Horticulturist Judy DeFiglio recently spoke with 25 participants about Barnegat Bay and the use of native plants in their yard.  The presentation helped attendees plan their Bayscape for Barnegat Bay garden and plants were on site for immediate purchase.

Bayscape for Barnegat Bay

 Field of Cone Flowers

Welcome to “Bayscape for Barnegat Bay”!
Originated in Monmouth County, our Shore Stewards program has been expanded to include Bayscape for Barnegat Bay. It is a grass-roots effort that engages people throughout the Barnegat Bay watershed to become better stewards of the coast by becoming better stewards of the land.
Barnegat Bay has been in serious ecological decline due to many human activities that take place on the watershed lands that drain to the Bay.  Scientific studies estimate that 66% of the nutrient pollution entering the Bay is from non-point sources due to land use and development.

In the Bayscape program participants learn about the best practices for managing their own property; appropriate use of pesticides and fertilizers, water use, and native plantings that will improve the ecosystems along the coast. The program also engages coastal communities that are not directly on the water to demonstrate proper stewardship and to show their communities the importance of protecting the land to protect the sea.

In the fall of 2008, we created a "Bayscape for Barnegat Bay - Coastal Native Plant Demonstration Garden" on the grounds of the Maris Stella Retreat and Conference Center located in Harvey Cedars on Long Beach Island.  This project showcases a variety of native plant gardens that citizens can duplicate on their own property.  The plans to create these gardens and a list of local nurseries that carry the native plants are available on our Conservation Issues: Protecting Barnegat Bay webpage.  The American Littoral Society also provides advocacy workshops and garden tours at the site.

In 2010, we expanded our program in Ocean County to educate and motivate citizens in the Barnegat Bay watershed to take action for the Bay by creating more native plant gardens. With funding provided by the Barnegat Bay Partnership we broadened our outreach to specifically include municipalities and faith-based organizations to deliver education programs about the ecosystem and implement new Bayscape gardens throughout the area.

We also sponsored our 2nd annual native plant sale at the Barnegat Bay Festival in June.  In addition to the sale we hosted a “Gardening with Native Plants” workshop the day before the festival and dozens of individuals took our Shore Stewards pledge.  In 2010 alone, we have introduced over 1,500 native plants to the Barnegat Bay watershed!

BAYSCAPE IN YOUR BACK YARD

Spend some time this winter getting ready for spring by planning a Bayscape in your back yard. Help reduce polluted runoff going into Barnegat Bay by replacing high maintenance lawns and other exotic species with beautiful native plants that require little water and no fertilizers and pesticides. We have adapted the garden designs from our coastal native plant demonstration garden on Long Beach Island (see below) for general use. Each of the six gardens is designed to appeal to different tastes, to meet the needs of specific location types, and to attract different types of wildlife. You can follow these designs exactly or use them to inspire your own variations.
