Help us 'grow' a movement for a healthier Barnegat Bay ecosystem

Bayscape for Barnegat Bay engages individuals, businesses, private communities, houses of worship, clubs, schools and governments throughout the Barnegat Bay watershed to become better stewards of the coast and bay by becoming better stewards of the land.

Barnegat Bay has been in serious ecological decline due to many human activities that take place on the watershed lands that drain to the Bay. Scientific studies have shown that large quantities of the stormwater (nutrient) pollution entering the Bay is from non-point sources due to land use and development.

We can all help protect and restore the Bay by implementing native plant gardens and reducing lawn areas and polluted run-off. Our Bayscape program educates participants about the best practices for managing their own property to protect and restore the ecosystem such as:

  • reducing your lawn area or bordering your existing lawn with plant buffers
  • practicing appropriate use of pesticides and fertilizers
  • creating habitat for pollinators and other species
  • limiting water use
  • using native plantings to improve the health of the entire ecosystem along the coast

The program pays special attention to educating inland communities that are not directly adjacent to the water about the importance of proper stewardship of all the watershed land areas to protect water quality in our streams, rivers and Bay.
