MANAGEMENT
Executive Director, Tim Dillingham
When Tim Dillingham came on board as Executive Director in 2003, he brought with him more than 20 years of experience in coastal management and policy development gained in government agencies and non-profit organizations. He also brought his passion for the coast; a relationship developed since his boyhood growing up on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. Tim began his career as a defender of the coast in Rhode Island, as a consultant to the state"s Coastal Management Council and continued as a senior policy analyst for the state. During his years in that state, he also spent some time as an Environmental Planner for The Nature Conservancy. Tim began his work in New Jersey as Director of the New Jersey Chapter of the Sierra Club, after which he assumed the Executive Director post at the newly formed Highlands Coalition. In 2003, he joined the American Littoral Society, first as Assistant Director and soon afterward as Executive Director. Since then, he has focused on laying the groundwork to continue the Society"s more than 40 years of successful advocacy, education, and conservation in the 21st century.
To that end he has augmented the Society’s seasoned staff with additional talent, tools and technology; all the while leading the work of empowering people to care for the coast. Tim sits on the boards of Restore America"s Estuaries, Institute for Coastal and Marine Studies, Rutgers University; and the Stony Brook Millstone Watershed Association. He is a member of the Heinz Center for the Environment Committee on Sustainable Oceans and Waterways. He is a New Jersey gubernatorial appointee to the Highlands Water Protection and Planning Council and the Blue Ribbon Panel on Development of Wind Turbine Facilities in Coastal Waters. He holds a Master of Arts in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island and a Bachelor of Science in Biology, from St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
Northeast Chapter Director, Don Riepe
Don Riepe founded the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society in 1985. With 25 years as a naturalist and manager of the National Park System’s Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Don is knowledgeable about and a staunch defender of wildlife and habitat in the urban littoral zone. He has led the Society’s efforts to coordinate the International Coastal Cleanup for the state of New York for 20 years, successful marine debris and marsh restoration efforts, and the derelict boat removal program known as Jamaica Bay Clean Sweep. In 2004 he assumed the role of the Jamaica Bay Guardian, a Society program initiated with funds from settlement of a tidal wetlands violation in Brooklyn, New York. Frequently called upon to testify at hearings on behalf of the Jamaica Bay, Don recently made a significant contribution to the passage of legislation to protect New York City’s remaining wetlands. Don leads domestic and international field trips for the Society and his writings and photographs have been published in Scientific American, National Wildlife, Audubon, Defenders, Underwater Naturalist, Parade and The New York Times. He sits on the Board of the NYC Audubon Society and NYC Sierra Club and is Secretary/Treasurer of the NYC Butterfly Club and holds a Master of Science in Natural Resource Management from the University of New Hampshire.
Southeast Chapter Director, Dave Bulloch
A founding member of the Society, Dave Bulloch has directed the Southeast Chapter from Sarasota Florida since 1998. He is a retired chemist and vice president of R&D for a firm long since swallowed up by mergers. Dave’s life-long interest in the sea and its marine life led to his long-standing involvement with the American Littoral Society. A former president of the Society, Dave founded the Southeast Chapter when he moved to Sarasota and has grown it to 500 members from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Louisiana. He has written extensively on the marine environment and authored five books. His current focus is on plankton. His interest in the sea reaches beyond the scientific--he has been a six-pack boat operator, a dive instructor and an underwater photographer.
