Littoral Society

The American Littoral Society promotes the study and conservation of marine life and habitat, protects the coast from harm, and empowers others to do the same.

Since 1961 we have empowered people to care for the coast through advocacy, conservation, and education. We not only provide a voice for the coast, but also give concerned citizens the knowledge and tools they need to raise their voices with us. When we restore habitat, our objective is not only to restore a dune or rebuild an oyster reef, but also to motivate people to invest “sweat equity” into a piece of the coast, take ownership and become committed stewards. When we educate, we don’t merely provide books, CDs, or handouts. We lead students young and old into the water to get their feet wet and their hands muddy. Sitting at a computer or reading a book, people may develop an interest in the coast; standing knee deep in sea foam with sand between their toes, they will develop a passion for the coast.

Discover the diverse wildlife inhabiting our coast. After a short talk on the Society’s front porch, we will drive over to Horseshoe Cove on Sandy Hook Bay for a seining adventure. Participants are invited to help pull our 40-foot seine net through the bay, and experience the excitement of learning about the fish and other critters caught.

Littorally Local sunset cruise 2022

Get on board for the Littorally Local Sunset Cruise and silent auction, the Littoral Society's fundraiser to care for the coast on Friday, September 16 in Atlantic Highlands.

The fourth annual event will include dockside cocktails and appetizers from 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm onboard Teal Cruises' Festiva. From 6:30 pm - 8 pm we will cruise Sandy Hook and Raritan Bay while local ecologists provide a brief presentation on local ecology and natural history. Enjoy a casual dinner and beautiful sunset!

There is no cost to register as a bidder in the online auction, which features items such as a personal bird walk on Sandy Hook or Jamaica Bay, art from a variety of artists, Pilates sessions, a cedar and sage smoked oyster box kit, personalized yoga session, eco-airboat tour of the Two Rivers, go & glow skin care package, and a basket from Rojo's Roastery and Cafe. The online auction will take place from Friday, September 9, to Saturday, September 17, and culminate at the event.
