![]() We're getting ready to make some waves! Thanks to the efforts of our dedicated fish tagging members, the American Littoral Society Fish Tagging Program is about to reach a truly incredible milestone! For 60 years, our diligent volunteer taggers have been passionately tagging saltwater fish along the Eastern Seaboard. Now, the countdown is officially ON: we're just a few thousand tags away from hitting our astonishing one millionth tagged fish! We're so close to hitting this incredible number we can almost taste it, like a striper on a grill. But we need your help to get there! We're seeking to raise $2,500 to directly support our Fish Tagging Program, which brings together seasoned anglers, citizen scientists and researchers to better understand the remarkable species inhabiting our coastal waters. Your generous donation will go directly towards providing the essential tags and equipment our volunteer anglers need to tag our one millionth fish and beyond. It's an investment in understanding the health of vital fish populations like striped bass, and in ensuring the future of our precious marine resources.
This isn't just about a number; it's about deep scientific insight and a profound commitment to our global fisheries. Every single tag applied by our volunteers plays an extremely important role in understanding the changes happening in our ocean ecosystems. For popular species like striped bass, summer flounder, and black sea bass, our tagging efforts help us track individual fish growth, estimate population sizes, and reveal their incredible migration patterns. When a tagged fish is recaught, that precious data – from where it was tagged to where it was found – provides invaluable insights into the fish's life and movements, directly supporting ongoing scientific studies and informing crucial management decisions that keep our fisheries healthy for generations to come. Through the tireless efforts of our more than 2,000 volunteer taggers across the eastern seaboard, our program has grown to become not only the longest-running, but also one of the largest fish tagging initiatives in the United States. Along this incredible journey, we've introduced countless young people to the wonders of our coast, fostered a vibrant community of ocean enthusiasts, and provided essential data to renowned scientific organizations like Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. While the one-millionth tagged fish is a huge milestone, our eyes are already set on the future, eager to further our scientific contributions, enhance community-building efforts, and continue to evolve the program. In the past year, we have embraced advancements like more efficient dart tags and partnered with Fish-Track, which makes an app that enables recreational anglers to report their catches and track their tags through their phones. Join us in this historic moment – every contribution helps us continue this vital work and advocate for the sustainable future of our global fisheries!
