Want an unforgettable way to celebrate the new year? Then embrace the crisp winter air and stunning coastal scenery while taking a walk with the American Littoral Society. For the 49th year in a row, we will be hosting New Year's Day hikes in New York and New Jersey! The New Jersey group will meet on Sandy Hook and the New York group will meet at Fort Tilden on Breezy Point. If you'd like to join our New York walk, we will gather at Fort Tilden and hike to Breezy Point Beach on Monday, January 1 at 11 a.m. We will meet outside the Little Church, just inside Fort Tilden's 169th Street Entrance in Queens, NY (Note: the Main Gate may be closed). The walk will cover approximately 2 miles and is relatively easy. At noon, participants will attempt communication with the Littoral Society group hiking at Sandy Hook! We will finish with a beach cleanup on our way back. Get more info and register for the New York Walk. For those who would like to join us in Gateway National Recreation Area's Sandy Hook Unit, we will meet at Littoral Society Headquarters in Building 18 of officer's row (GPS: 18 Hartshorne Dr, Highlands, NJ). This walk is a little more difficult, covering approximately 5 miles, with half of that distance being on sand as we head toward the northern tip of Sandy Hook. After attempting to signal those with the Northeast Chapter group on the other side of the bight, we will return to the Littoral Society building for hot dogs and cocoa. Both walks are free, but please RSVP so that we know how many people to expect. Dress for the weather, layers are recommended. Bring your own snacks and water for the walk.
