While Earth Day is Tuesday, April 22, the American Littoral Society will mark the occasion with a week of events that promise a range of opportunities for individuals to get involved and make a positive difference for the planet and the coast. Our Earth Day festivities will include sprucing up our Slade Dale living shoreline project, a nature walk for kids ages 5-12, and a "Birds, Blooms, and Biodiversity" walk on Sandy Hook. More events may be added, so keep an eye on our website calendar. Earth Day Explorers Activities will kick off on Earth Day itself with an Earth Day Explorers walk on Sandy Hook. This fun and interactive nature walk will take children ages 5-12 on an exploration of the wonders of spring that can be found on Sandy Hook! Together, we’ll search for budding plants, returning birds, and buzzing insects ![]() Activities will run from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and include a Scavenger Hunt, listening for Nature Sounds, and opportunities to engage with nature through touch, sight, and sound! Cost is $10 for Littoral Society members and $20 for non-members. Register on our website. Birds, Blooms & Biodiversity Join us on Friday, April 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a guided walk within the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. We will explore spring bird migration, dune ecology, and seasonal changes along the shore! This event will highlight the importance of native plants for bird populations and the role they play in local biodiversity. It is ideal for ages 14 and up. Cost is $10 for Littoral Society members and $20 for non-members. Register on our website. Slade Dale "Christmas in Spring" and Point Pleasant Earth Day Celebration On Saturday, April 26 from Noon - 4 p.m., Littoral Society staff will join the Point Pleasant Borough Environmental Commission for an Earth Day Celebration at Riverfront Park, 2300 River Road, Point Pleasant, NJ. We will be talking to visitors about our work in the community, the state and beyond, while also recruiting volunteers for our work on our Slade Dale Living Shoreline Project the following day. The Earth Day Celebration is free and will feature food, rides, a petting zoo, and more. Find more information on Facebook.The next day, Sunday, April 27, 10 am - 1 pm, Littoral Society staff and volunteers will add recycled Christmas trees to the branchbox breakwaters at Slade Dale Sanctuary in Point Pleasant, NJ. Please RSVP so we know how many to expect. Earth Day Celebration at Liberty State Park Also on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., we will be tabling at a free Earth Day event at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. Hosted by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) the family-friendly event will be centered at the park’s CRRNJ Terminal and will be held rain or shine. We’ll celebrate our planet with fun activities, eco-friendly organizations and much more. Event highlights will include:
