Gateway National Recreation Area

Sandy Hook Unit

Discover the spooky birds of Sandy Hook!

Learn about creepy and weird bird facts on this Halloween themed walk with the American Littoral Society's expert birder, Dan Burgoyne!

First, we will meet with guests by the pavilions at parking Lot C. From here we will lead guests across the road over to Plum Island to scan our bayside tidal flats! We'll keep our eyes peeled for marsh birds such as great egrets, royal terns and saltmarsh sparrows.

Then we will hop back in our vehicles and drive north over to the Spermaceti Cove lot. Here, we will scan the surrounding saltmarsh & cedar stands for royal terns, great blue herons, and golden-crowned kinglets!

Perfect for birders of all experience levels!

Please bring binoculars, sunscreen, bug spray, a water bottle, snacks, and appropriate footwear or hiking shoes for paved and sandy terrain.

Walking Distance: 1.2 miles (round trip)

Location 1: Parking Lot-C Hartshorne Dr, Sandy Hook, NJ 07732
Location 2: Spermaceti Cove (Life-Saving Service Station Lot), Sandy Hook, NJ 07732
