Join the Littoral Society in May through June for horseshoe crab surveys and tagging along the Shark River estuary.
Crabs are tagged and counted to help determine their population and migration habits. If done properly, the process doesn't harm the crabs and provides valuable information for sustaining populations of these living fossils. Survey beaches will include Memorial Park Beach in Neptune City, L Street Beach in Belmar, the Marina on Riverside Drive (2 sites), and S. Riverside Drive (2 sites). Only staff or experienced volunteers will be allowed to tag at the Hillside Avenue site (if accessible). Meeting place is the pavilion in Memorial Park, Neptune City, New Jersey. Closest address to meeting location is 26 Myron Avenue in Neptune City. Scheduled meeting times are ½ hour prior to high tide in Shark River Hills to allow for training and assignment of beach. Volunteers should dress to get wet, have a change of clothes, bug spray, and flashlights or head lamps. A limited amount of chest waders, drills, and 2 5/32 bits can be provided. A tagging packet containing data sheets, pens, ruler or measuring board, clipboard, health and safety form, tags, informational packets, and a membership brochure will be provided. Volunteers must be trained and learn about the biology and importance of horseshoe crabs prior to tagging live crabs. For trained volunteers that tag independently throughout the season, please show up on May 29 at 6:30 p.m. to receive tagging packets and a drill with bits. For more information contact Capt.
