Join the American Littoral Society at Fortescue Beach for a volunteer opportunity and a volunteer appreciation event all wrapped into one (location changed from Thompsons Beach due to unforeseen circumstances). Come to volunteer, stay to shell-a-brate! Volunteers will help us place shell bags and something new - reef prisms - on an intertidal reef designed to help protect the restored beach. Participants should dress to get dirty and wet. Wear closed-toed shoes. We encourage participants to pack as if prepared to spend a day away from the car: bring your own snacks, change of clothes/extra layers, towel(s), gloves, bug spray, sunscreen, head cover, beach chair, waders or hip boots (if available), and hand warmers The prisms are specially designed structures that give young oysters a place to settle and grow. They are four feet long and built from jute fiber coated in concrete, then filled with oyster shell. This unique composition creates an ideal, plastic-free surface for oysters and other marine life to call home. By slowing down the waves, the prisms help protect the beach habitat that is vital for horseshoe crabs and migratory shorebirds. After the work concludes at 2 p.m., join us to celebrate. Refreshments will be provided, with food by Spanky's BBQ. Please register if you plan to lend a hand, so we know how many people to expect. Additional event details, including on-site accommodations and postponement information, will be provided in a follow up email prior to the event. Can't attend but want to become a member?
