Large Marine Debris

With the help of partners and volunteers, the Society has facilitated the removal of hundreds of tons of debris from Jamaica Bay, including derelict vessels and abandoned docks.

In addition to organizing thousands of volunteers for the New York State Beach Cleanup, a program which has succeeded in removing hundreds of thousands of pounds of harmful material from the shorelines of New York, the Society has also conducted numerous large marine debris removal projects in Jamaica Bay.

Through these efforts, we are improving water quality, preserving the habitat for wildlife, and improving the environment for anglers, boaters, and other recreational users of Jamaica Bay.
The current phase of the Society marine debris removal and education program is funded by the NOAA Marine Debris Program.

Large Debris Removal

Large marine debris, like derelict boats and docks, can cause hazards to navigation and injure, or even kill boaters and other recreational users.

Derelict boats often cause harmful substances like oil. gas, and anti-fouling paint to leach into the environment.

Large debris can also settle in marshland and other sensitive aquatic habitats, causing extensive damage.

Volunteer Cleanups

Smaller debris items, especially plastic, can cause toxins to leach into our oceans and bays as these objects degrade in the salt water.  Countless marine creatures have been condemned to a slow death through entanglement or the ingestion of debris which can cause intestinal blockage and starvation.  Volunteer beach cleanups are an important component in the Society's quest to rid Jamaica Bay of marine debris.

Education

The Society is collecting data on the types and amounts of debris that litters the shorelines of Jamaica Bay.

The data will help to determine the best ways to educate and motivate community groups, schools, and individuals on the ways that they can reduce their footprint on the marine environment.
