You Can Make A Difference.
Every year in New York state, thousands of volunteers pick up tons of trash during beach sweeps organized by the American Littoral Society.
In New Jersey volunteers help build oyster reefs and plant dune grasses to help restore dunes. In our offices volunteers stuff envelopes and assist in administrative tasks to help keep down costs. Below are some of the numerous ways volunteers contribute to protect and improve the coast. If you'd like to get involved, contact us at info@littoralsociety.org |
Beach Cleaning |
The American Littoral Society’s role is to lead, organize and fund the NY State Beach Cleanup. We help identify sites for cleanup, recruit and provide guidance to beach captains and volunteers across New York State, provide training about how data should be recorded and reported, procure and distribute supplies and Certificates of Appreciation, staff a hotline for volunteers and manage publicity. We develop partnerships with public and private groups and have successfully engaged public officials, corporate volunteer programs, environmental organizations and diverse community groups. Oyster Reef building |
The American Littoral Society has been building offshore oyster reefs in Barnegat Bay and intertidal reefs in Delaware Bay and continues to build more. Volunteers are needed to bag shell and to construct the intertidal reefs. The offshore reefs are constructed by contractors but are populated by volunteers with boats who drop oyster spat onto the reefs after the shell has ben placed. For more information click here.

Administrative
|
Most of our correspondence with members comes from our headquarters at Sandy Hook where volunteers help with administrative tasks to keep the newsletters, magazines, membership correspondence and other printer materials flowing to our members.
