Oysters once were crucial components of New Jersey's coastal ecology and economy, but they were almost wiped out by disease, over-harvesting and development. The American Littoral Society is working to bring oysters back to bays and estuaries around the state. Funds from the sale of our Re-Oyster NJ t-shirts go to helping fund the “Shuck It, Don’t Chuck It” shell recycling program, which takes shell from Monmouth County restaurants for eventual use in building oyster reefs. In order to keep the program successful, we have to recruit and train volunteers, host events to educate the public on local aquaculture and our recycling efforts, grow our number of participating restaurants, recycle shell from all over the county, and purchase materials in order to do all of these things. Your purchase will help to keep our program going and will spread the word every time you wear your t-shirt out!
