Water Quality

Water quality is a growing concern in the united states. Water is a shared resource that flows through systems both natural and man-made, each with its own issues and concerns.

Stormwater Management

Rivers and Bays of New Jersey are suffering from non-point source pollution caused by over-development of natural lands and poorly managed storm water runoff.

The Littoral Society works with communities, homeowners, and businesses to reduce storm water run-off through green storm water management and water friendly landscaping.

Projects in Barnegat Bay and Delaware Bay include:
  • Golf Course Certification
  • Green infrastructure, such as storm water basin retrofits and native plant rain garden projects (Barnegat Bay & Delaware Bay)
  • Businesses for a Better Barnegat Bay
  • Barretts Run riparian buffer
  • Follow the rain drop education program

Water Conservation
The Kirkwood-Cohansey Aquifer encompasses most of the Coastal Plain region of New Jersey. The largest withdrawal of the aquifer is for domestic water use. In total, over 48,000 gallons of water annually from this aquifer! The Kirkwood-Cohansey Aquifer is subject to contamination from polluted runoff from industrial, commercial and urban land use development. Projects include:
  • 20 Gallon Challenge
  • Golf Course Certification
  • Fix-a-leak education program
  • Water Conservation for businesses
  • Free Water Audits for businesses
  • Water Champions school water audit program
  • Rain Barrel workshops and installation

Wastewater Management
Aging wastewater infrastructure and over-taxed septic systems release un-treated wastewater to New Jersey's groundwater and surface waters.  Education programs are designed to increase awareness and septic maintenance. Projects include:
  •  Septic maintenance education and outreach
  • Surface water testing program for water pollution
  • Community engagement campaign- Show Us Our Water- for the state to release the Water Supply Master Plan
